DIFFERENT TRADITIONS SPEAK THIS PRINCIPLE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS...

BIBLICAL

(Leviticus 19:18):  Love your neighbor as your self.

(Matthew 7:12):  Do to others what you would have them do to you.

(Luke 6:31):  Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

JUDAISM

(Talmud, Shabbat 31):  What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor:  that is the whole Torah; all of the rest is commentary.

BUDDHIST

(Dhammapada 10-1):  Consider others as yourself.

ISLAM

(Forty Hadith of an-Nawawi 13):  Not one of you is a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

HINDUISM

(Mahabharata, Anusasana Parva 113.8):  One should not behave toward others in a way which is disagreeable to oneself.  This is the essence of morality.  All other activities are due to selfish desire.

JAINISM

(Sutrakritanga 1.11.33):  A man should wander about treating all creatures as he himself would be treated.

SIKHISM

(Guru Arjan Devji 259): Don't create enmity with anyone as God is within everyone.

SUFISM

(Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, Master of the Nimatullahi Order):  The basis of Sufism is consideration of the hearts and feelings of others.  If you haven't the Will to gladen someone's heart, then at least beware lest you hurt that heart, for on our path, no wrong exists but this.

CONFUCISM

Love your neighbor in the same manner that you love yourself.  Be mindful to treat your neighbor in the same manner you so wish to be treated.

(Mencius VII.A.4):  Try your best to treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself, and you will find that this is the shortest way to benevolence.

TAOISM

(T'ai Shang Kan Ying P'ien):  Regard your neighbor's gain as your own gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss.

SHINTO

The heart of the person before you is a mirror.  See there your own form.

(Ko-ji-ki Hachiman Kasuga): Be charitable to all beings, love is the representative of God.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN

(1640 BCE, Eloquent Peasant 109): Do for one who may do for you as you cause him to do.

NATIVE AMERICAN SPIRITUALITY

(Black Elk):  All things are our relations.  What we have done to our relations, we have done to ourselves.  All things are one.

(Pima Proverb): Do no wrong to your companions.  Have no hate for your enemy.  Otherwise it is not he who is wrong, but yourself.

AKAN PROVERB

Doing good to others is the basis of social unity.

NIGERIAN PROVERB

One going to take a pinted stick to poke a baby bird should first try it on himself to feel how it hurts.

WICCA

One's Will should be carefully thought out in advance of action.  Do whatever you Will, as long as it brings harm to none, including yourself.

MODERN RELIGION

(Unitarian Univeralists):  We affirm and promote respect for the interdependent of all existence of which we are a part.

NOTE:  APPROPRIATE ACTION AND APPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP -- THAT IS, RECIPROCITY AND NON-VIOLENCE -- ARE OFTEN SPOKEN ABOUT INTERCHANGEABLY UNDER THE CONCEPT OF 'THE GOLDEN RULE'.  AND THIS PROVIDES A GOOD LESSON, IN THAT THERE OUR NO CLEAR DIVISIONS BETWEEN OUR SEVEN 'BODIES', BUT RATHER ONE BLENDS AND DIFFUSES INTO THE NEXT.
